some good news about prop 8

The ACLU, Lambda Legal and the National Center for Lesbian Rights have filed a writ petition asking the California Supreme Court to invalidate Proposition 8 if it passes. It seems that the state constitution requires any change to the underlying principles of the document to be approved by the state legislature BEFORE being voted on by the public. Since that didn’t happen, the writ is claiming that the proposition is invalid.



Bittersweet Election Results

“Last night was a dream. Prop 8 is my hangover.” We toasted with champagne, cried over Obama’s speech, went out to the streets to celebrate. Personally, I have hopes that the courts won’t let the constitution be re-written. There’s still a lot of work to do to help educate the state of California about what same-sex marriage means, and there’s a lot of lies and fear out there from people wanting to protect ‘traditional’ marriage. It’s a bittersweet victory for civil rights.
