I read Daphne Gottlieb’s Why Things Burn before I worked at GV, and so when I had the opportunity to ask Daphne to write for the GV Weekly (and when she accepted), I was really excited. Daphne always writes about interesting topics, and I knew she’d bring her unique vision to the magazine. She did indeed. Her articles touched on such topics as erotic kidnappings, older women, penis size as seen from a queer woman’s view and having a book written about sleeping with her.

I love when things come full circle. For instance, we sent Kathy Griffin a GV gift-basket when she hosted the GAYVN (Gay Video) Awards here in SF. Not only does she make a 5 second guest appearance in the GVTV episode (well, her back, actually) but her own show featured her opening the gift basket and “discovering” the toys inside. So, I blogged about the whole affair on the GV Blog (click HERE to read it). Well, Kathy Griffin’s people found my blog and emailed us and asked if they could put it on Kathy’s own site, in the forum section. And, the circle is completed!

I have been reading Mark Morford’s writing for years…back in the day, I used to get the Daily Fix email…the highpoint of my morning. Morford had mentioned Good Vibrations in several of his articles, and I decided to take a chance, and asked him if he’d do an interview with us. He did, and as you’ll see, the dude is just funny. GVTV. Born from a scrapped commercial, we decided that video was a great medium to get our sex-positive mission out to the masses. So, we hit the streets, armed with educational fliers, a camera and some questions. The rest is history. GVTV has hit ONE MILLION views, on YouTube alone! We’ve sprinkled the videos on many video-hosting sites, so don’t be surprised if you come across a GVTV episode on your internet travels!

Here are some of my favorite episodes:

Good Vibrations Treasure Hunt Contest. “Hey JP, can you play a game-show host?” Besides being Sr. Director of E-Commerce and Merchandising, JP CAN play a game-show host! This contest was fun to create and even more fun to shoot. watch

Finding the G-Spot. I took my camera to the football field with me one fine Sunday morning and talked to some of my teammates and competitors about the G-spot. It was awesome!

GVTV Visits a Dildo Factory. I love the folks over at Vixen Creations…they were awesome hosts and we learned how to pull dildos. That, my friends, is a good day at work!

The Search for the Clitoris. I made (I mean, asked!) my coworker put on a safari hat and pretend to look for the clitoris in the park. And, the other part of the video is shot in a bathroom. Come on folks, that’s funny!

Cock rings! Holy cow, is this episode popular! It’s a runaway hit on YouTube. Funny thing is, one of my friends happened to walk up on the shooting of this video. He was kind enough to participate. It was a pretty awesome day…hanging out in the Castro, talking to folks about cock rings….

JB: The Jollie (renamed at GV as the Angelina) has received a lot of attention here due to its unusual and unique shape. Can you talk a little about how the shape came to be and how you took the shape of a woman’s body into account (ie, the three pleasure points)?

LC: With over 20 years experience in designing silicone products for the medical industry, our Creative Director knows how to develop an endocavity apparatus. To do so we started with some sound patient matching techniques where you design the product based on the actual anatomy. So we took some impressions of the vagina. This was a very interesting process. It makes you wonder why ‘men’ think we were made to fit them. The forms created from this process dictated the shape of our first toy, the Jollie. It was clear that a typical dildo or even a penis was functional only due to how pliable the vagina is, not the fit of the member. We designed the Jollie to fit the vagina not relying on the vagina to form around the toy. The fitting of the design to the vagina creates the wonderful shape of the Jollie. Thats why the cervix, g-spot, and clit stimulation are part of the Jollie design that’s what the female anatomy is made of.

JB: Can you tell us a little about your company, Jollies? What did you do prior to starting the company and what made you decide to change direction/careers?

LC: My background was actually teaching. I was an elementary teacher for quite a few years. Then I started a holistic healing shop and taught people about health and herbs. I was actually working in sales and marketing for the insurance business. That’s actually how I met my Creative Director, I was trying to sell him insurance. We started talking, and matching our individual skills came up with JOLLIES, LLC.

JB: Was the Jollie the first product you designed? Which product came next?

LC: The Jollie is the first sex toy we designed. Bubbles was the second. We wanted to try utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) technology so we came up with the Bubbles design and created the masters for the molds via Rapid Prototyping. This was to understand the limitations and advantages of incorporating the state-of-the-art in product design of sex toys. Since then we have designed Luna, Jollett, Wave, and Jack. Jack is the only product that we did not integrate the high tech product design techniques since it was molded from an actual penis. Although the high tech approach is beneficial both in time and some design aspects, our Creative Director loves the intimate hands on approach to form studies. This is where the ergonomics of the design are influenced by feel and look rather than engineered to a specification. We really like to design a toy based on a desired outcome and then test shapes to fulfill that outcome rather than just duplicate neat shapes.

JB: You mention soft and hard Jollie products on your web site…are all of your products available in either consistency?

LC: Actually no. When we started Jollies we were unsure as to what durometer the public would like since the Jollie was such a unique shape. So we marketed both soft and firm. We found that the firm was a bit too firm and really didn’t sell so we have moved to offer only the soft silicone.

JB: Your web site says that you can customize the Jollie and put objects inside the silicone mold. What’s the most unusual request you’ve had from a customer?

LC: We’ve had requests like; putting the first rose a boyfriend (now husband) gave his girlfriend. Cherries, pictures of a departed husband, Chicago skyline, and the list goes on.

JB: Will the Jollie ever be available in a harnessable version? And if so, would the shape change much?

LC: The Jollie works very well because of its shape, not necessarily the action of the user. The large G-spot section of the toy kind of makes full in-and-out thrusting difficult. Jollet shares the Jollie shape but was designed to be a more typical and to accommodate vibrators. Even then the shape of Jollet creates a unique action. We found that twisting the Jollet back and forth provides the most stimulation rather than a thrusting motion. That’s why the handle part of the toy has a non-slip-grip design. The double Jollie, Las Chicas, is in the works and will incorporate a thrusting insertable design. This may end up as a harnessable product also. Our first harnessable design is the Wave. The Wave is a great harness starter toy for couples play (oops I gave the new toy away). Not too big to scare but shaped for optimum stimulation, and its long enough for it to work!

JB: What can we expect from you in the future? Are there added vibrations on the way?

LC: We have a large number of products we are currently working on. This includes a line of boy toys too. Just out of development and into production is Luna, a blast proof anal toy designed around actual impressions of a female rectum, Las Chicas, our double Jollie design, the Ergoring, a ergonomic cock ring designed to be less stressful on the scrotum
yet fully functional, and our new line of Jack Keys. Jack Keys are cock rings with anal and vaginal \ insertables molded on the ring for incredible masturbation stimulation and, or partnered sex.

I recently sat down with web developer, model and actor Shawn to talk to her about this exciting new venture into the world of on-demand queer porn….

JB: So, how did the idea of a pay-site with new and different Crash Pad episodes come about?

S: After several incredibly successful DVD productions, Pink and White Productions was interested in expanding its market presences while simultaneously increasing control over content and accessibility to the content. With increased portable technologies and interactivity, web-based content has become the way to go.

However, due to the over-saturation of the adult market, starting any new enterprise is very difficult. You always need an “in” and edge to create the kind of pull that will not only sustain your product but lift it above the masses. Shine’s movies (The Crash Pad, Superfreak, and In Search of the Wild Kingdom) have received international acclaim, toured through the major film festival circuits, and have been highly awarded. Her work most definitely rises above the rest and it’s that reputation and quality that we are bringing to the world wide web with the CrashPadSeries.com. On top of the quality which we have become known for, we are taking our site to the next level of web technology by utilizing web 2.0 features such as online networking, and profile/community building software which will be highly integrated into our all new content.

What really distinguishes us from other sites that are using this technology is our full integration—members will essentially be a part of the on-going plot that fuels the drama (and sex) of the site. It’s like myspace meets LWord meets Melrose Place, and instead of just reading about the dramatic sex lives of your friends, you get to watch too!

JB: Are there any sites similar to The Crash Pad Series, I mean in terms of starring players as well as the target audience?

S: Short answer: No. Despite that fact that there are several sites that utilize community-building interactive features, I know of none that are plot-driven, queer-centric, and feature the flavor of sex and people that we feature. The closest sites that come to mind on the queer centric front: nofauxxx.com and redhandedporn.com, but there are no other plot-based sites I can name off the top of my head.

JB: What will members get to see?

S: Members can expect all the hardcore, queer, critically-acclaimed action that you see in The Crash Pad, but keep in mind this is all NEW content. We will be featuring two video scenes and two photo sets a month with some returning characters (Dylan Ryan, Jiz Lee and Shawn) and many, many more new ones. Of course you will see the signature sweaty, dirty, hardcore queer sex, filled with fisting, loads of squirting, passionate kissing mixed with some rough and tumble S/M, face-slapping fun, but we also will be featuring the lighter side of things with some tickle fights and playful, fun encounters. JB: How does it feel to be breaking new ground when it comes to queer porn on the internet?

S: Exhausting, exciting, scary and inspiring. I quit my full-time job to do this and right now thing are really taking off. Aside from the launch of the CrashPadSeries.com, we are also doing a national tour of our third film, In Search of the Wild Kingdom, which took “Best Trans Sex Scene” at the Feminist Porn Awards this year. People of all genders and sexualities have been so supportive (and turned on by our work), it’s phenomenal. One of my favorite moments this year was at Gay Pride when this very cute gay boy walked up to me and said, “I jerk off to your videos, I usually only watch boy-on-boy but your stuff is hot!” I said “Me Too!”

JB: Where do you see the site in 5 years? How about queer porn in general?

S: On vacation? Ha! Probably doing what I always do, working too much, but it’s hard not too when you have jobs like mine. Ideally, I see Pink & White becoming one of the power houses of the industry like Wicked, Vivid, Evil Empire, Falcon, etc….and creating a Neo-Porn Valley, which of course would be in the Bay Area—it’s already starting with most of the gay boy stuff.

JB: Is there anything you’d like to say to GV Weekly readers that we haven’t covered yet?

S: If I could say two words to people who ask “How can I support sex-positivity and the empowerment of one’s sexual identity?” I would say “Buy porn!”

Find out what turns you on, support it, love it, jerk off to it, throw parties around it. If we don’t start actively supporting an industry that openly celebrates various aspects of our sexuality, it will only be a matter of time before it is taken away from us.

Particularly at this time; there is a very strong and covert movement happening that is trying to suppress and essentially destroy representations of sexuality that fall outside the reproductive, marriage-only model. The life line of the adult industry is slowly getting choked. Increasing pressure is being put on the credit card industry and processors to control and sterilize the online industry by declining to serve more and more adult businesses. This has also been happening in the realm of insurance providers.

People need to stand up and proudly support adult institutions and let the credit card and other industries know that the adult field is a necessary and legitimate business.

GV Gift Basket, anyone?

So, the marketing team created a gift basket made for a queen, or in this case an incredibly funny D-list celebrity. A double dildo? She’ll love it! We put in some lube (not everyone needs a double dildo, but everyone needs lube). Some vibrators. A card from the marketing team (with a funny photo of the group of us)–my part read: “Hey, lesbians DO like you!”–and then I think I wrote something about her dogs. This was in response to her always claiming that lesbians don’t get her humor….which is so not true!. And off the basket went to her hotel room.

Later that evening, I happened to be on my way to the Castro Theater to shoot this video:

I was walking past Harveys restaurant when I saw the camera crew. I stopped dead in my tracks and called up my friend JP, who was on his way over as well.

“Kathy Griffin!” I yelled. “She’s in Harveys! Hurry!”

In a few minutes, Ms. Griffin walked past me on her way to rehearsals. If you look carefully in the Pleasure Pixie video above, you’ll see her a little bit later as she heads back out to her limo. Barbie, our events coordinator at the time, was standing a mere foot or two from her, with her back turned.

“Barbie, Barbie,” we were saying, trying not to yell….we wanted Barbie to see Kathy, so that she could ask her if she got the gift basket. But alas, the moment was lost.

Fast forward to last night… it’s the GAYVN episode, we all had made mental notes that it was coming up. Would the gift basket be featured?? A text from JP answered that question. He’s in New York, so being 3 hours ahead, he knew the answer before anyone else. “Kathy Griffin is showing our gift basket right now,” said his text. Three hours later, I’m watching it as well. Half of the show is about Kathy performing at a prison (which is actually quite touching)…and then she gets ready to see her gays.

The scene starts with Kathy reading our card, and the fun starts as she and her staff (”Team Griffin“) go through the basket. Lots of sword-wielding with the Double Dipper, and Tom ends up sticking it in a jar of lube. Kathy turns the Laya on and talks about it for a while. And at the end, she says she gave all of the vibes away, explaining that “giving away” means that assistants Jessica (are you REALLY a lesbian like Kathy says? hmmm) and Tiffany fight for them. I sat down with Coyote to talk about what making this important list has meant to her….

How does it feel to be featured in the same magazine, on the same list as Belladonna and Jenna Jameson?!

To be honest, completely overwhelming. Not only are we in different segments of the industry (making content versus buying content) but they are mega-stars in both adult and mainstream industries and I don’t feel that important. To be considered influential in this larger-than-life industry is really an honor. I just feel really honored.

How did AVN find you? Or…How did the nomination come about?

I don’t know. I work closely with people over at AVN in the promotion of Good Vibrations products and brands. I have also been included in a few articles they’ve written such as the one on phthalates. A few months ago I received a phone call from AVN asking for my thoughts on some of the top players in the industry who were under 40 and I named a few accomplished people never thinking that I would be under consideration as well.

Did you know who the others were that were picked before you saw the issue?

I had no idea. I honestly don’t know the ages of many of the people I work with and I didn’t know which segments of the industry they were looking at.

Did you scream when you first saw the cover?

I think I actually gasped for air and my skin was all goose-bumpy. I adore Belladonna and to see her looking so radiant… and knowing that somebody considered me to be the same caliber or in the same range of caliber. I just feel really honored… and a bit overwhelmed by it all.

Were you the only non-porn-world person chosen for the list?

No, but one of a few. Julie Stewart, co-owner, of Sportsheets was also included. I was actually excited to see this – Julie is great to work with and such a lovely person in general. It was great to see another sex-positive company included in the list and one where women and female pleasure is very much a value.

How psyched were you that you had the chance to verbalize why your job is so important to you?

I love my job and I love this company. I don’t often get a chance to talk about what it is I work so hard for and why this company and our values are so important to me. It was awesome to be able to be passionate and know that other people would be able to hear about what it is I work for every day.

By the way, what’s your favorite adult movie and who’s your favorite performer?

I’m usually a fan of the story-line adult videos… but recently added video selection for Good Vibrations to my position to I’ve been watching A LOT of porn. Out of everything I’ve watched recently my absolute favorite was Mami Culo Grande 4! Seriously hot. Lots of enthusiasm, attraction and round, round bottoms.

As for performers, I have to say that Belladonna remains one of my favorites. Lorelei Lee grabs my attention as well—such a cutie. And despite not being that impressed with his AVN acceptance speeches, Manuel Ferrara is a super performer!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10?

I think about this a lot. This industry is amazing and I would hope to still be in it in 5 years. I can’t really see myself working anywhere else—Good Vibrations is a great company. Not only in the history and legacy but also in how supportive a workplace it can be. We attract top-notch employees and it can be a real pleasure coming to work. I can still see myself here in 5 years but if not at GV than perhaps working somewhere else in the industry. Maybe someplace like AVN or Free Speech Coalition. There are a lot of ways to work in the industry—I just hope I can continue to exact change and be in a position to talk about issues I feel are important.

It’s actually not true that video killed the radio star, because Sirius Radio has become quite a phenomenon, with its 200 channels and superstars such as Howard Stern. In fact, our friend Diana Cage hosts a show on Sirius’ Out Q, the gay channel. On her show, “Diana gets down and dirty with talk about relationships, gender politics and all things personal. Diana blasts stereotypes with an irreverent and smart look at GLBT lives and culture.”

GV Staffer Jo-El is now working with Diana Cage as a guest “sexpert.” Jo-El has been sex educating the masses since 2001, traveling all over north California, Jo-El’s passion lies in the sex positivity that Good Vibrations promotes. Whether it is working with youth, med students or post-menopausal women, nothing is more satisfying than getting accurate sex information out there. (source)

Hey Jo-El, how did you get involved with Diana Cage’s Sirius radio show?

I met Diana a couple of years ago in the subcultural world of San Francisco queer “celebrities” via my drag king alter-ego, Rusty Hips. I knew she moved to NY last year, but wasn’t aware it was because of her Sirius radio show. I divulged to my co-worker, Coyote (GV’s toy buyer), that I secretly wanted to do a radio talk show when we were brainstorming marketing ideas. That’s when Coyote told me that Diana was doing her show on Sirius, and suggested I get in touch with her to get in on it. So I did.

What’s your role on the show?

I am the guest “sexpert” every other Friday from 11:15-midnightish Eastern time. Diana knows me and the many hats I wear…one as a performer, which is great for radio…the other as a sex educator, which is great for content. I have been working as a sex educator for almost 6 years…teaching workshops, training all in-coming sex educator sales associates for Good Vibes, and directing the off-site sex education programs of the Center for Sex and Culture. I’ve been ready to take it to the next level for a while now. Diana’s show is a great opportunity to do so.

What kind of questions do people call in with?

You name it! The call-ins have been pretty random. I think what has surprised me most about the show, both listening and when I’m a guest, is how many heterosexual callers are listening to the Out Q Gay Radio station! Yay for the straight but not narrow, right??

Has there ever been a topic brought up that stumped you?

Stumped…not really. The only time I had to really put on my sex educator thinking cap on was in reference to someone inquiring about anal fisting. In my many years teaching about sexuality, I have never had anyone inquire about anal fisting—can you believe it??! Luckily, I know the physiology and anatomy of all-things anal related, in addition to vaginal fisting techniques, so I did pretty good.

What’s the most common kind of question people have about sex? Are there “themes” that pop up regularly?

I’ve been doing the show for only a couple of months every other week, so I haven’t noticed a “theme” yet. Diana always prompts me with questions at the beginning of the show, and those seem to revolve around sex toys and vaginal fisting…so far. Female ejaculation has come up a couple of times, too.

What’s the most unusual question you’ve ever had?

“Unusual,” huh?? Now I’m stumped. So far, I haven’t really gotten a caller with an unusual question. Working as a sex educator, however, I’ve pretty much heard it all…”Can you use shit as lube?”, “Can you get pregnant from having anal sex?”, “Does having anal sex mean that you’re gay??” I love these types of questions the best…they are usually preceded with “I have a really dumb question…” I truly believe that there is no such thing as a dumb question in regards to human sexuality. The truth is that most people have been given misinformation or complete lack of information about sex. Diana’s show is great because it gives us as educators the ability to reach people all over the world, really, and give them accurate, sex-positive information that is so needed.
