Em & Lo on TV!
By Dr. Charlie Glickman • Feb 2nd, 2010 • Category: Blog
I recently found out that the fabulous Em & Lo hosted a 10-part TV series for a British channel. SEX: How to Do Everything is a fun romp through the world of sexuality. I’ve seen the trailer and I’m looking forward to checking out more of the series.
Since British TV is a bit different than what we get to see here in the US, I got in touch with Em & Lo to ask them a few questions about the show. Check out the trailer below and then scroll down to hear what they had to say about the series.

1) Tell us about this project. What inspired
We wrote a book for the UK publisher DK called SEX: How to Do Everything — it’s an illustrated sex manual, with each chapter focusing on one topic (seduction, orgasm, manual sex, oral sex, kink, fantasy, etc). The publisher got in touch with Channel 5 in the UK and encouraged them to make a show with us as hosts. The show has the same title and each episode covers one topic, just like the book.
2) You interviewed quite a lot of people. What are some of the highlights? Topics covered? Where did you find people to interview?
Some of the interviewees we chose ourselves — experts we know and love in the biz — and others the producers found, some of whom we ourselves probably would have passed on (like the kind of sad couple who participates in dogging, that British pastime of going to public parking spots and getting it on in front of — or with — other parkers).
One of our favorites was, of course, your very own Carol Queen — she’s so lovely! Another fave was the London dominatrix Mistress Absolute, who was smart, sophisticated and had a great sense of humor. Another was this adorable little gay fashion designer who had great energy and a charming accent who showed us his line of fetish wear. There was also a therapist who appeared on the show regularly who was very sex positive and knowledgeable — she was very inspiring.
The show also had two “roving reporters” who’d try various activities — like attending oral sex workshops, becoming members of the mile high club, getting a G-shot injection (not recommended!) — and we’d always talk to them after the fact. They were a sweet, posh couple, the kind you’d never guess would be up for doing it in front of a camera so many times.
3) What did you learn about sex that you hadn’t known before? What surprised you? What did you learn and put into practice in your own lives?
We knew we were prudes, but we didn’t know we were that prudish! There’s a big difference between talking about the intimate details of sex (which we’re good at) and showing the intimate details of sex (not our forte). So the show is a lot more graphic than we would have liked — but hey, you’ll certainly learn exactly how anal play and female ejaculation work!
4) The tv series was for UK television. How did that make it different than if it had been for the US?
Like we mentioned, if it had been a US show, we might have been able to have our parents watch it. But since it was done in the UK, they could — and did! — show A LOT more. Plus, the British sense of humor is still a bit Benny Hill, at least when it comes to sex — so there are some video segments we weren’t a part of that we just don’t get.
5) What was the funniest thing about the project?
It’s hard to pick just one, though we totally cracked up when we got to meet the guy who is Britain’s current reigning masturbation marathon champion. We’re not sure quite what we expected him to be like, but we were totally shocked — and charmed — to discover that he was this really sweet, humble, hilarious, articulate guy who talked about the “rug burn” like he was discussing the weather. He’s a straight hairdresser (seriously!) who said he learns a lot about how to be good in bed from listening to the women whose hair he cuts, and how they complain about what their guys do wrong. Someone needs to give that guy a show!
