Female Condom gets the rare FDA stamp of approval

When I first became aware of the Female Condom (FC)I was skeptical and intrigued by the design. Just the idea that a condom would be “worn” by a female partner rather than a male partner was really novel. I’ve never tried it myself but working in our stores, I grew to have an acute appreciation for the FC as many women confided that they actually prefer the feel of the FC to other condoms.
Not only did some women (and their male partners said their partners) prefer the feel they also liked that it could be inserted before penetration as opposed to “in the moment”. The fact that the FC is non-latex is a benefit for people with sensitivity to latex products which currently make up the majority of safer sex barriers.
Many women also liked that the FC protects both against pregnancy and STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections). Getting used to insertion and use takes a little practice… but that could be seen as a benefit a well!
And now – as if all that wasn’t enough – the second generation of the Female Condom has actually garnered the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This industry has a hate/love/hate relationship with the FDA as they tend to do more harm then good… so it’s nice to see this approval. Perhaps this signifies a shift in the way the FDA will approach adult products in the future. One can hope.
