GV in the Press
By Kuono • Jan 15th, 2009 • Category: BlogThis morning I had several emails in my inbox from co-workers about good news for Good Vibrations.
Thought I’d share, cause sharing is caring. And interesting! : )
The first one comes from a website called Mission Local. From events to voting information, real estate and arts events, Mission Local is a fantastic resource for news and notes about the Mission District of San Francisco. Author Ayako Mie profiles Good Vibrations, which has a store on Valencia and 17th — right across the street from the Police Station! She writes, ‘Even in Bad Times, Sex Sells’.
Even in Bad Times Sex Sells

“Good Vibrations opened its first store in the Mission District in 1977 to serve Mission’s diverse community. It gained strong support from female customers by offering women-focused products and sex-positive education, and added a second store in San Francisco on Polk Street, one in Berkeley on San Pablo Avenue and one in Brookline, Mass. The stores are distinguished by fronts covered with glazed glass, but once customers walk inside, lubricants, vibrators and dildos are displayed as openly as iPods, laptops and iPhones at an Apple Store…
This season, students and tourists are Good Vibrations’ biggest buyers, Stacy said.
The store offers a 15 percent student discount. “I bought a $78 vibrator as a little Christmas present for me,“ said Katelin, a student at UC Berkeley. “It’s more expensive than the products at other stores, but the quality is good, and I get a student discount.”
X-Biz also picked up our announcement of the Stimulus Package, a new kit coming soon to GoodVibes.com with a selection of products that saves you 30%. Our staff sexologist Dr. Carol Queen is quoted:
“What we find is that in times of economic stress, consumers turn to comfort items that they can enjoy in the privacy of their own homes — as a result, we often see an increase in sales when the world situation is challenging,” said Carol Queen, Good Vibrations’ spokesperson and staff sexologist.
In the end, placing value of your personal time, your lovers, yourself, is important no matter the econimic conditions.

Thanks for the ping back, but here’s a question that we were unable to resolve. Our reporter said that your original store was on Valencia at 22nd street, but a reader said it was Dolores. Finally we took down the exact site, but can you tell us where the original store opened? Thank you, Lydia
Hi Lydia,
I’m on the job of finding out! I only moved here to SF Bay Area in 1999, and I believe many of my co-workers also were not familiar with the original store. Someone here knows, so I’ll let you know asap after I hear back. I’m sure Dr. Carol Queen knows!
My personal bet is Dolores and 22nd, like your commenter said. We’ll see if they were right!
Dr. Carol Queen says…
“The answer is: 22nd and Guerrero is where GV opened; the next location (before the 23rd/Valencia one we moved from a couple of years ago) was further west on 22nd, closer to Dolores. Confirmed all this with JB, though she doesn’t remember street numbers.
