[...] Vote for Joy. This is one of many articles out there right now that are encouraging people to vote no on 8 (which you should) but it’s better than many of them because of the personal content that it puts forth. It’s all about how great gay weddings are because they’re about joy instead of tradition and obligation and brings up some really great points about what a marriage should really be about.
Thank you for articulating the joy you witnessed at gay marriage ceremonies. It seems the kind of joy that captures the spirit of a room and consumes the crowd - so that they are carried away upon it, practically unaware and in the moment. The enthusiasm and sheer joy felt when celebrating pure love between two people is just beautiful. To remove the marriage industry trappings is to remove the artifice, rendering the ceremony exclusively about love and partnership. It is not surprising that those who witness unadulterated happiness are entranced by it; we may not realize, but our heats simply crack wide open in the face of such purity.

Heartening and anguishing at once: Stellar. Thank you for tackling this issue with your characteristically bold, unapologetic humor and heart.

Judah, you've hit this nail right square on the head.

The strength of your writing is your ability to slough off layers of cultural trappings, and lay bare the core of the topic you're addressing. In this case, you've illuminated not only the tangible feeling of elation that presides over gay weddings, but also, the albatross of custom, expectation and responsibility that sullies too many straight weddings. You've also suggested another interesting, albeit sad, point: the true mark of a right being fully integrated into society is having it be taken for granted.

I hope the situation you describe, (i.e. the ubiquity of gay marriage leading to it being draped in the same weighty paradigms as straight marriages,) is slow to come. However, if that is the price we must pay to assure that the constitution's right to pursue happiness is granted to everyone unilaterally, then so be it.

Your piece makes me wish I was a CA resident so I could vote my conscience on Prop 8.

This is an absolutely beautiful post. It pinpoints exactly what it is that has made some of us straight women say "I'm not getting married", exactly what type of perspective would be needed to change our minds and exactly why there are so many reasons that No on 8 is important. Great work!
