Nerd Worship: Video Playlist
By Allison • Jul 25th, 2007 • Category: BlogHello and welcome to my video playlist. I feel like I might have to start off with a short explanation as to why I decided to name my video play list, Nerd Worship. I discovered long ago that my goofy, cartoon-loving, book obsessing personality did not stop when it came to what turns me on. Videos of models shaking their ass have a certain appeal, but to really get my juices flowing it has to be a little smart, a little silly, and of course, a few trekkies wouldn’t hurt. So I hope you enjoy this spackling of amusement, take it for what it’s worth, and maybe share a few giggles along the way.
Rilo Kiley- Moneymaker
Featuring real porn stars and a super sultry Jenny Lewis, this video has the perfect amount of Hot and Kitsch. You can tell everything is done a little tongue in cheek, which is always hotter to me than those videos where everyone is just trying to out-sexy each other for the camera (what a turn off). With a few obvious nods to low budget 80’s porn and some vintage video effects, Indie darlings Rilo Kiley step up to the plate but don’t take themselves so seriously as to lose sight of the joke. This is what I would dub “Snarky Hot”
Dresden Dolls- Backstabber
Gender-bending super duo, The Dresden Dolls, are having almost as fun making this low budget treasure as you will be watching it. Complete with good deal of handy-cam inspired cinematography, an adorable plot line featuring more than a few name tattoos, and a delicious dose of knife play (with no Lindsay Lohan in sight), you might just be inspired to start making your own homemade erotic comedies– good thing the GV 2nd Amateur Erotic Film Competition is coming up in Oct. click here for details on how to enter your own film: http://www.goodvibes.com/ContenT–Good-Vibrations-Erotic-Film-Competition–id-1997
Jenny Owen Youngs- Hot In Here (Cover)
While I wouldn’t classify Jenny’s music as nerdy, my love for her certainly is. Something about a beautiful girl with a guitar doing a highly unexpected song and then really owning it is a wonderful thing. Her song, “Fuck Was I” was featured in the critically acclaimed, Showtime series, “Weeds” and you can often spot Jenny touring the country or playing in or around NYC. You can check out Ms. J.O.Y.’s incredible original songs on her Myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/jennyowenyoungs or by picking up her new album, Batten The Hatches. Also be on the look out for an exclusive Jenny Owen Youngs interview right here in the GV Magazine coming soon!
Flight Of The Conchords- Business Time
I have to send a special thank you to Courtney Ramey, the wonderful manager of our Polk Street store, for introducing me to this amazing clip. If you don’t have HBO you probably haven’t seen the show Flight of the Conchords, but thankfully the folks at YouTube have made this song available to us all and I couldn’t be happier about it. There is something about his delivery that kills me every time I watch this video. Since I have something of a Nerd fetish, this guy would probably bring a smile to my face even if the song wasn’t so clever, but with an almost too honest look at why keeping your relationship spicy is so important, Business Time has a sex appeal that completely satisfies.
Leslie Hall- Gold Pants Lullaby
I know I might be alone in this, but a totally brilliant performance artist brings me to my knees a thousand times faster than a supermodel and Leslie Hall is my latest crush. Besides the fact that her songs are amazing and she travels around the country in an RV that doubles as a gem sweater museum, her Patti Labelle inspired spacesuits are magnificent and her dance moves are even better. Check out her site at http://www.lesliehall.com/ and fall in love with this gem straight out of the Gem state (that’s Iowa to most of you).
