Blogging for S.E.X.

By Kuono • May 16th, 2007 • Category: Sex and Culture

Technology loves to fuck. From photography and motion pictures to web cams and video-on-demand, the world of technology has ridden, dutifully, on the backs of the sex industry. To keep up with it all, there’s the sex blogs.

What is a blog? In short, a “web log” is a frequently updated (in reverse chronological order) post that provides commentary, news, or personal reflection on a particular subject. The majority of them incorporate text with some links, images, podcasts, or videos, and almost all allow readers to reply with comments.

A year ago, Good Vibrations began featuring blogs by its employees. A sounding board from one of the leading sex toy companies, blog.goodvibes.com has showcased the writings from nearly every position in the business, from Board Directors to SESAs (Sex Educator Sales Associate), each with their unique voices, advice, links, and typos.

Through administering the blog, I’ve had the opportunity to take a look at sex blogs. I’m here to share some of the sites I’ve seen. By no means am I myself a blog professional, nor to I pretend to know everything out there. I encourage you to take the tour, and if you find something worth sharing, please post it as a comment here and let us know!

Why blog?
Blogs are immediate, affordable, versatile, easy to use, and often overlooked by legal policy that troubles most sex purveyors, pornographers, and perverts. Here are some general categories, and some of my favorites from each. My advice is to read this article first, and then go bookmark crazy, starting with blog.goodvibes.com and our RSS email subscription!

In No Particular Order…

Industry News
XBiz Blog, Eroszine, and AVN (Adult Video News) are great sources for mainstream industry announcements. You can also find major industry news in some of the more commentary based blogs of Gawker Media’s Fleshbot.

Violet Blue
In a section all to herself, this blogstar/podcaster is so prolific she not only posts on her own site Tinynibbles.com, but she has also graced the pages of a number of other blog sites including her column “Open Source Sex” on SFGate (which not a blog but you should read it anyway.) This entire article could be about Ms. Blue, but just go trot on over to her site and spend the next five years of your life catching up to speed with her. (Before you do, buy a dildo or some condoms from your good pals at GV, will ya? Thanks.)

Pornstar Diaries
In recent years, entrepreneurs in the sex industry have picked up on blogging. Becoming their own publicists and supplying a constant outlet to fans, here are some notable stars who finger the keyboard: Belladonna’s myspace blog, and Nina Hartley. Other sites supply an outlet to their fans, such as VividAlt and Suicide Girls. I like Pink & White Productions’ Porn for Pussies blog posts as they give a glimpse into the production of their rising company.

Sex Workers are Us
Waking Vixen Productions, $pread Blog, and Bound Not Gagged are shed light on an industry which about 99% of other blogs exploit. Another blog of intellect is Rachel Kramer Bussel’s LustyLady. Do you know others? Please don’t hold back.

Moving Pictures
Moving on, what would a sex blog be with out hot pictures and video clips? For all things sexy and strange you’ll find some real gems at Eros Blog. There’s also a great collection of NSFW videos at The Smoking Gun. For clips of sex, you can spend hours browsing pornotube, or find some faces in petite mort at beautiful agony or Red Handed Porn.

Sex Ed 101
Where to go for sex advice? Our top blog keyword searches tend to be “How do I orgasm?” “How to keep the love in my relationship?” and “Fisting”. You’ll find lots of informative posts in many of the blogs mentioned above… but here are some who bank solely on their advice columns. Some healthy options include: Dear Amy, Joan Price, and Susie Bright. And though they’re not blogs, check out the sites linked on GV’s underage page for some really great resources. Nora Dye is traveling across the United States on her bicycle to spread the love and knowledge of sex positive places on her WanderlustwithRhonda.

Bring ‘em to me
Though all these blogs have RSS feeds, and many have special links where you can subscribe to have updates emailed right to your inbox, Sugasm acts like a blog cowboy, roping the prime posts each week for your reading pleasure. Posts are submitted by readers and bloggers alike, creating a handpicked crop of quality info and entertainment.

Honorable Mentions
I wouldn’t be able to write an article on Good Vibrations Magazine without mentioning the blogsreal-live.jpg of GV’s Board Members Dr. Carol Queen, whose Blog is posted on her own site and also feeds into blog.goodvibes.com. For analytical and thoughtful commentary on Sex Politics and more, you can’t beat the Queen. And as you can probably guess, newest GV Board Member Comedian Margaret Cho keeps a humorous and politically aware blog with lots of surprises.

With a wwworld of blogs out there, I’ll end at Man and Wife TV, a site I came across awhile back by pure accident, and recommend that you have a peak. I’d also recommend the blogs of blog.goodvibes.com’s own bloggers and of course I could go on forever with additions, but I’ll stop here and let you add to the collection.

  2. Hey Jez!

Lovely article — thanks so much for mentioning DeepThroated!

I’ve also got one correction for you on the Sex Worker Blogs front:
While Rachel Kramer Bussel is a great blogger, writer, and editor, she is actually not a sex worker, and she does not write a sex work blog.

Have you considered adding a “sex writer blogs” category to this list? It’s where a lot of folks would fit! :)

Thanks for all the work you do!

    Cheers,
Gina de Vries, Queer Writer & Sex Blogger

p.s. — Also, be sure to check out sexerati.com!

  3. Technology is helping to know more about the wide world of sex.

  4. OMG Gina,

Thank you so much for your comment!
I was afraid I’d miss some major info, and also get my facts wrong. First off, Sexerati.com is Great! (How could I forget?) Secondly, I should move Rachel Kramer Bussel into the Sex Writer Catagory – what a fabulous idea.

    : ) More suggestions, please!
    xo, Jez

  5. Add the always impressive Slashdong to that list of sex toy tinkerer blogs.

  6. Thanks for including me in your list! This is a great resource!
