men-o-pause and Hormones
By authori-ty • Feb 24th, 2007 • Category: BlogI haven’t written anything in ages between the flu, V-day and makin/breakin up I have been wiped out.
But recently a co-worker had sent an email asking about feedback about menopause. At first the email didn’t even register to me. What does a 29 year old man know about menopause? More than you might think. I am FTM and have had a Hysto.
I have had my own version of the “pause” man-o-pause as I like to refer to it.
I have more in common with a 50year old woman than my 29 year old woman counterpart.
What do we have in common: Estrogen deprivation (I had a hysto and post meno non-trans women’s estrogen levels drop dramatically)
Estrogen is responisble for all sorts of things and with out it the following
1.hot flashes and night sweats with disturbed sleep
2.vaginal dryness and loss of elasticity of vaginal tissue
increased urinary tract infections and problems with urinary incontinence (difficulty holding one’s urine)
3.changes in mood, or depression
4.memory problems and possible increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease
5.breast changes—loss of firmness
6.skin changes—thinner skin, less collagen and moisture in the skin
7/loss of bone density—may eventually lead to osteoporosis
8.increase in cholesterol levels—may increase risk for heart disease
9.loss of numerous beneficial effects of estrogen on body organs and systems
I don’t share all of these symptoms because I have an additional hormone working in my favor. But anectodately
I have to urinate more frequently and my sleep patterns are off for sure. AWESOME
There is low to no research for men and menopause for now I just read Ladies Home Journal and O magazine and just get strange looks
