Behind the Vibes: Meet Angelique X

By Judi B. • Sep 1st, 2006 • Category: Behind the Vibes: Staff Profiles
Meet Angelique X….tattoo artist, rock star…page sniffer.

Where did you grow up?

Born in Hayward, I lived in the Newark/Fremont and San Francisco area till my Dad took a job in Modesto in ‘83. It was either Modesto or Iowa, so my Sisters and I begged to stay in California. Boy what a change from the Bay Area! I imagined there would be cows walking the streets, I wasn’t far off. It’s not the most inclusive city, but I made do-joined a dance company, became a public resource speaking and met my band mates for my old band, Venus Bleeding, and moved back here in ‘97.

When did you start working at GV?

2/22/05

What did you do before working at GV?

I was an Assistant Manager at Torrid. And before that I was Assistant Manager/Fashion Show & Gallery Curator at Stormy Leather. I have also worked as a receptionist/book reviewer & writer at the Eastbay Express Newspaper, floor person and cashier at Amoeba in Berkeley.

What’s your favorite thing about working for GV?

Making a difference in customers’ lives and being appreciated by my co-workers.

Did you ever think you’d be selling sex toys?

I didn’t know I could before I heard about GV. I had wondered what it would be like to be a sex store clerk when I was in school. There was one store in Modesto and the clerks were pretty nice, but I was told that women had a harder time working there (this was in the early 90’s). Things have changed-before I got the job at Torrid, I visited the store and applied there when I went back to Modesto to take care of my Mom, and saw all sorts of hip cute butch girls working there. I didn’t get it, but here I am!

What’s your idea of a “perfect” day?

Having not to rush to whatever I am doing; being on time.

Name five things you couldn’t live without?

I guess I could live without a lot of things, if I had too! But…I would prefer not to live without:

My partner Davey Dean
“Ruby Woo” Red Mac Lipstick
Books-my fetish is reading.
My spirituality
My pets aka “kids”
DR WHO!!!!!

What’s your favorite (sexy) movie?

Neu Wave Hookers (the new one by Ion Mc Kai), Pirates cause it’s funny…Bella loves Jenna and Evil Pink. Oh! You just wanted one?

What’s your favorite book?

I have too many books to list. I am a Bibliophile, a page sniffer!

Favorite Song?

Melt with You by Modern English. I am sure I have a ton. But I loved the movie Valley Girl, like ya know it was totally tubular.

Where could we find you on any given Saturday night?

Playing a show with either my bands Charm School Dropouts, T&A , my puppetry troupe Shadow Circus Creature Theatre or tattooing a client. Any other time when not doing all the above, I will be glued to the boob tube watching the new Dr. Who or reruns of Farscape.

What’s one thing about you that would surprise your co-workers if they found out?

Just one thing? Maybe not too many things surprise them, but this surprised one of them: I am an ordained Minister, was a Sunday School Teacher at 13 for a Psychic Church, and thought I really was a boy until I was 4.

What’s one thing you’ve learned by working at GV that you’d like to share with our customers?

Never assume things. Ask questions!

I love to rawk.

I just found out that I am in “24 Hours on Craigslist“! Somebody sent this to me.

T&A — my Acoustic Country Band!

Photo by Larry Utley for his book Iron Fist-Velvet Glove. I was also in Undressing the Corset.
